Até fui aos anos da minha Avó! --- I even went to my Grandmother's birthday!

--- With my friends praying for me, it was much easier. Here I am with my brothers and sisters always making me happy!

sempre vossa

Marta

June 17th

I have been away for such a long time, but here I am finally and with very good news. On Tuesday, I underwent a bone marrow exam and lumbar punction under general anesthesia and woke up from it in good spirits. We waited for the results: no cancer cell was found!

I now have to undergo another general anesthesia surgery to remove my dear catheter through which it was possible to administer so many treatments without suffering.

Morphine, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, pain in the bones, vomiting, fevers, fungi, exhaustion...are for now things of the past but they underline the fact that there is no happiness without the cross.

My Parents say that it is with great joy and profoundly humbled that they receive this further marvelous gift from God! For this kind of pampering is not something one can deserve, but rather receive in the simplicity and silence of someone who exposes oneself to the grace of God just as the flowers expose themselves to the beneficial and renewing drops of rain.

Today, in a particular way and with great tenderness I would like to:

Remember those who fought alongside me but were taken to heaven earlier.

Remember those who go on with painful and difficult treatments, those who have relapses, those who are exhausted and with no strength to trust and hope.

Remember those who laughed and cried with me during the past two years.

Remember those who, in silence, were always with me.

Remember with unspeakable gratitude those who prayed for me: I shall always keep you in my heart and prayers. A particular word to so many Priests who offered Mass for me, to the consecrated, to cloistered nuns...

Remember my siblings who made so many sacrifices for me, always with a smile. Among them, were giving up sunny vacations or other fun outings. True: because of this, we ended up discovering the "Different Summer" in Serra da Estrela: a great scoop for large families where we made about 120 new friends and which has become a 'must'(www.veraodiferente.org/).

Remember my grandparents, uncles and cousins who suffered so much for me and who constantly kept me company so I would never feel lonely or sad.

Remember each one who visited or wrote in this blog and who lived this disease as their own.

Remember doctors, nurses, auxiliary personnel, teachers, voluntaries, chaplains and all who crossed my path at the Oncology Hospital and helped me through this crusade God asked us to make. They were our haven in the labyrinth of the disease and the tornado of the unpredictabilities and who, with their professionalism and care, did not spare any effort to make my every day a little more bearable. With what relief did my Mother call the Hospital at 4 in the morning to get a reading on any strange symptom of mine only to hear on the line a friendly voice who would coach her through what to do. And with what relief did we check into the hospital at whatever hour of night knowing that I would receive all the help needed to go through each crisis!

Remember all the scientists, researchers, workers who with their efforts contributed for so many victories over cancer in my generation.

...

Well, this adventure is not completely over. For the next six months I will have monthly blood tests which after that will progressively be done further apart. For now, I am going to enjoy this 'break' with the same serenity with which I received the first news of cancer. I have always been in God's hands: I know He loves me unconditionally. «Full of God, I fear not what is to come, for come what may, it will never be bigger than my soul» (in the words of our poet Fernando Pessoa). The world has always been mine anyway, for, despite being tiny, I am "precious in God’s eyes" and I "can do all things in Him who strengthens me". In the meantime I shall sing to the Lord for the marvels He operated in me.

I'll ask my parents to post a photograph of me with my curly hair - soon.

All my love,

always yours

Marta

Ano Novo

E ainda me mandam piropos!

Bem hajam.

Vossa sempre Marta

New Year

Dear everyone!

The year should not end without my sending you a huge kiss thanking you for the tenderness, care, love and prayers with which you have been filling my life!

I have not written lately for two reasons. The first is that I am doing astonishingly well: even my hair is growing back and my siblings don’t even call me boldie anymore; my skin is slowly improving. The second is that my parents are lazy!

The only noteworthy event was that in November I was down with the flu, one of those viruses that affected the whole family – the only ones that escaped were Mathilde who has grown tough from all weather sailing and Martim doubtlessly protected by mathematics. I held on for a week with a few of my siblings sick but when Mother fell ill I thought it would be nice to keep her company. Struck with fever I couldn’t escape: I had to start daily antibiotics through the catheter.

Despite having to spend a few hours every day at the hospital I managed not to have to check into the hospital: nice indeed! My Parents were surprised as to how much my data went down: at some point I only had 100 neutrophiles... So much so that I was ordered to stop my daily dose of chemotherapy: that’s how serious it looked! It took me a fortnight to start medication again.

It was truly thanks to your prayers that I did not move into our 5 star hotel: the 7th floor of the Oncological Hospital (that's the way Maria Guerra’s Mother calls it – Maria is one of my partners in this adventure who, God be praised, is doing well).

Today, what I really want is to send a big kiss to everyone starting with my dear doctor, the entire medical team, nurses, the only male nurse Mario (Nuno your are gone but not forgotten), the auxiliaries, teachers, cleaning assistants, volunteers and all Hospital personnel. You are amazing and your care for all of us and the way you greet me when I go for treatments is another proof of God’s existence.

And to all, longtime friends in life or through the blog, I do not tire of telling you of my total gratitude. I always look forward to seeing what you write here with such love, humor and a sense of prayer. And you even flatter me!

I pray the Child God whose birthday we’ve just celebrated, He who is my best friend and who has so abundantly blessed me, to fill you with the happiness of His Baby laughter and to help you carry your cross just as Simon of Cyrene helped Him. May Our lady, God’s Mother and our own protect you and take you to her Child the Prince of Peace for that is the most precious good we can have.

I am counting on you all for next year! Anyone who says a prayer remembering my intentions please don’t forget to include the friends I have made along the way some of whom have gone and some who are about to leave. They are strong witnesses to a life lived to the full with detachment. They are, with you my fellow bloggers, the best friends in the world.

For all I pray to our God of Love. Take care.

Your Marta

Os nossos amigos deram-me tantos mimos!

E o Santo e Poderoso
Espera hoje por meu sim...
Minha alma canta de gozo,
Maravilhas fez em mim!

Maravilhas fez em mim,
Da alma brota meu canto
O Senhor me amou
Mais que aos lírios do campo
E por Seu Espírito Santo
Ele habita hoje em mim
Que não pare nunca este canto:
Maravilhas fez em mim!

Hello everyone!

Yes, it’s true - a long time has passed since I last gave you news... Despite that, I have felt your continued prayers and am very grateful to you all. So here is some news to breach the distance.

To the astonishment of many I have been growing up and my brothers and sisters say that I look much better. They think I run in a funny way and laugh as I go around. They like to tell me I am prettier but the truth is I haven’t had those crises during which I turn paper white and get numbed by pain. Once in a while I am sick to my stomach and recently my skin is very dry and full of pimples but that is all temporary. My hair too has been growing back and in a few weeks, if it does not fall again, I’ll be able to comb it. My sisters say they can’t wait to put a pink ribbon in my hair! We’ll see. One thing at a time. The blood tests I have been doing, almost weekly up to now, have shown that my data is within normal standards and without apparent alterations. I still have a ‘school year’s worth’ of chemotherapy pills and injections...

During the holidays, we spent a week at the beach although I could not go into the sun. So I actually only went to the beach at the end of the day with my Mom, wearing a huge hat and long skirts. One of the days I went in the afternoon but most of the time I was taking my nap on the stroller in the shadow. Every day I could splash my feet in the water and that was really fun.

After that we came home for a week so my catheter could be checked and I would have my shots and then off we went to a ‘different summer’. One week in Serra da Estrela with some friends who were veterans at it and whom we joined. It was super: mountain hikes with scientific explanations, picnics, fascinating old villages enclosed inside enchanted castles... and my siblings even went swimming in the river and skiing on an artificial slope.

Our friends pampered me so much! One day they all said the rosary in thanksgiving for the many blessings I have been getting. And high on the mountain there is, sculpted in the rock, an image of Our Lady of the Snows where we celebrated Mass.
We gathered, on top of rocks and overlooking the precipices, more than 100 grownups, teenagers, kids and babies!

How great it was! See how God uses everything for our good? Without this leukemia we would never have gone for such a fun ‘different summer’. At the beginning my siblings said they would ‘happily go to the mountain in August’ but I could see it was for my sake that they accepted to go so far away from the beaches. Now I know they loved it and are planning on doing it again next year. Treatments permitting, we shall stay two weeks instead of one!

Back home we had the visit of our dear Father Roger Landry who came to us for some deserved vacation and with him brought our God under our roof. He loves God so, so much that everything he does is with enormous joy and holiness and next to him we feel how very good God is! Thank you, Father Roger, for everything you are...

In the meantime, I have celebrated the first anniversary of being told that I have a cancer and I cannot but put everything in God’s hands, once more - He who has been accompanying me always and has been watching over me with such tenderness. During the ‘Different Summer’, a song was often sung that touched deeply my heart: it is about Our Lady, but I feel I too can rightly sing it. I’ll leave you the lyrics so you can meditate a little on how huge God’s love is for each one of us. A big hug to everyone, thanking you for your prayers for me.

Great things He has done for me
My soul sings for joy
For on my littleness
Have rested His eyes
And the Holy and Almighty
Awaits today for my yes
My soul sings for joy
Great things He has done for me!

Great things He has done for me
From the soul springs my song
The Lord has loved me
More than the lilies of the field
And through His Holy Spirit
He now lives in me
May this song never end
Great things He has done for me!

Beijinhos, Marta.

Porquê o Sofrimento?

Resumo do capítulo tirado do livro

A Verdade do Catolicismo

Hi there. Just a little note. My mom received a written message on her mobile phone from my doctor basically saying «congratulations!» That is a code between the two of them meaning that the results of lastweek's analyses continue to improve. They didn't even have to talk. A message was enough. Very good indeed!I have also had the marvellous short visit of our dear friend Cardinal Sean O'Malley on his way to Sydney for the World Youth Day presided over by the Holy Father (for the record: the event was attended by more people than the Sydney Olympic Games themselves in 2000!!!). Here, Cardinal Sean said Mass to which I was very attentive, I liked it very much and in the end he sang the Fátima song: that was great! I have also been to our parish Saint Elizabeth. I have this preferrence for the altar...I wanted to be next to Father Zé Manel while he was saying Mass and although he welcomed me, my brother went to get me! I love Father Zé Manel very dearly!

I have asked my mom to put here a text she's written for the Young Teams of Our Lady's Newsletter. It is the summary of a chapter on suffering by George Weigel and I think you will like it.Thank you for continued prayers. Have a great holiday. Till next month.

Love Marta.

Why do we suffer?

Summary of the Chapter taken from the book

The truth of Catholicism

by Gerorge Weigel

«In the Catholic view of things, suffering is an integral part of the history of humankind».

«The ubiquity of suffering has long been considered an argument against the existence of a good God. To say that God ‘allows’ suffering seems to make of God either an incompetent or a sadist» and so, without further ado, George Weigel throws himself, and us, into the storm.

It is not necessary to give a definition for suffering. Or search for examples. We all experience the pain, the fury, the anguish over brutal and incomprehensible suffering whether it is us or someone we love living it, whether we are more distant witnesses. Pope John Paul II in Salvifici Doloris says that suffering is a universal human experience which includes physical pain as well as moral pain. This double aspect of our suffering reveals something essential about our human nature and is a sign of transcendence. Just like love, which cannot be confined to any definition, suffering is a mystery through which we encounter God. If we have the courage to think through this apparent link between human nature and suffering, we will open ourselves to quite an unexpected understanding of the world.

The answer traditionally given by the Bible, reminds Weigel, is that «suffering, like evil, is the other side of the coin of freedom - at least as humans, since Adam and Eve, have lived freedom offered by God».

Suffering is related to evil, it is the experience of evil. But evil is not a kind of opposite pole of good, it is rather the absence of good. As such, it hints at what is the good. In the Bible, even when suffering is presented as a punishment, it serves to point towards a good that has been lost and to show that the present trial is a special opportunity for conversion, «another means by which we become the type of person who can live with God forever».

Nonetheless, despite the rationalization and explanations, something is still amiss. If creation is essentially good, what to do with the world as it is? To our astonishment, we discover that «the answer God gives to suffering is not to avoid it or deny it, or blame human madness. The answer God gives to suffering is to embrace it – it is to enter the world in the person of His Son, to redeem suffering through suffering». It is God’s love which determines creation and which gives meaning to everything. In the face of the horror of sin, of the absence of good, of the refusal of God, Jesus does not compromise: He hugs tight the cross and, in it, burns out and reduces to ashes everything that is absurd. «God’s ardent love … [consumes] everything in the world which is incapable of love, including evil and suffering». And thus, when everything seems lost that is when everything is gained, it is in the cross that all is renewed, in the death of Christ that the world is recreated.

Jesus being who He is - namely the incarnate Word of God, true God and true man - His suffering gains dimensions that go beyond His actual passion and death. Because He is God-with-us, when He walks toward the cross, when He voluntarily takes on that which in our human nature has strayed away from God’s creative plan, Jesus fills with the Love of God the void left by evil and suffering. Jesus ‘reclaims’ the suffering and sinful humanity: Jesus redeems. And because He redeems through suffering, He gives new meaning and content to all human suffering. Our own suffering becomes imbibed with the capacity to redeem. Note: suffering does not redeem because it is suffering. Suffering redeems because Jesus tied it to Love... and Love makes everything new.

Here, something extraordinary happens: suffering becomes a source of solidarity. When I am in suffering and associate myself to Jesus, I open the door of my personal salvation - because I enter into the Love that God is. But since God’s Love spreads out and cannot remain contained, my own experience of suffering, wrapped in God’s Love, makes me recognize others who suffer and enables me to help them. My passion, attached to Christ’s Passion, makes me have compassion for others. It is this, the message of the Parable of the Good Samaritan. «Suffering, for a Christian, is not an anomaly [...] it is a vocation»! The capacity to suffer alongside another, the ability to be moved by someone else’s suffering, the impulse to run in aid to anyone who is suffering... all mold my being for the Beatitudes. Receiving its meaning from the mystery of the redemptive Cross of Christ, suffering «transforms all human civilization into the ‘civilization of love’» says Pope John Paul II.

Anchored in Jesus’ Passion and Death, my suffering and my weakness become filled with the power of God, the redemptive power of Christ’s Cross, the promise of Resurrection. That is why it is said that with our suffering we can complete the redemptive work of Christ. By destroying evil and death, the Lord Jesus shattered forever our chains and laid the foundations of a new world. But because we still live in time and in history, each one of us has to experience salvation personally and individually renew the alliance with Love in anticipation of the new heavens and the new earth of the Apocalypse. Born a Man, God gave divine dignity to our humanity. Taking on the abyss caused by sin, Jesus brought back God to our midst.

Now it becomes clear why the question ‘why do we suffer’ does not make sense. All creation is good, we read in the Book of Genesis, and gets its purpose from the creative Love of God. Since it is not a good, suffering does not share from the inherent goodness of that which is created by God. In the face of suffering, the only possible question is: what do I do with this suffering? The answer to that is given by Jesus, from the Cross. It is the same given by Mary, Mother of God, who in silence, «in the mute pain of Calvary» is filled with compassion for Her Son who dies and for all the sons and daughters then entrusted to her who die because they do not give in to Love. What do I do with suffering? I am going to offer it for the salvation of the world. Inasmuch as I stick like glue to my crucified Lord, in that proportion does my suffering become resurrection …because «His yoke is easy and His burden light» and because He has left me the life giving nourishment through which I can daily rebuild strengths, re-center my vocation and live - already - of God.

George Weigel does not say it, but maybe insinuates it, when he mentions that humankind has lived its freedom in opposition to God: after Christ, after the incarnation of our God, we do not need to live out our freedom that way. We can live it like Mary, saying our ‘yes’ full of joy in moments of happiness and a ‘yes’ full of silence and compassion in moments of suffering. And by refusing ever more that which pushes us away from God, we can speed the glorious coming of Christ and the complete instauration of the Kingdom of our God who is Love.»
