16 de Março

Queridos todos

Pois é, na terça-feira dia 11 lá fui fazer o penso e as análises.

Dear everyone

As expected, I went to the hospital on Tuesday the 11th to dress the catheter and have the blood tests done. These showed that I am ready for my next chemo. As far as the catheter is concerned… the last stitch was taken off and an extra dose of adhesives was put in place.

But on Friday the 14th, for no apparent reason, the adhesives stopped adhering... and the catheter came out! There was talk of my going that very day to the surgery room to replace it, but it was eventually decided it was better not to rush things.

So I am no longer going to the hospital on Monday, instead I’ll spend Holy Week at home and then on the 25th, I’ll check in to put a new catheter and do my fifth and hopefully last chemo.

I have put the situation to good use, taking long baths, and enjoying playing around without the hassle of a hanging catheter. My brothers and sisters find it very funny that I now point to the spot that housed the ‘catéta’ – as I call it – explaining that it is no longer there!

I must say, I was ready to start chemotherapy on Monday of Holy Week. It seemed like a fitting way of being in tune with Jesus and I even had the company of Cousin Salvador, but God knows best... With the data so well, I might just go out a little bit... take advantage of these brakes God gives me.

Today I particularly enjoyed going to Mass at my Parish. Palm Sunday is such a forceful, intense day, and the celebration was a marvel of spirituality, sacredness, dignity and beauty. The acclamation procession for Jesus Hosanna Son of David, which started outside the Church, gave me an even greater desire to praise God. And I appreciate the fact that this historical moment is remembered on the same day we listen to the account of the Passion and Death of Jesus. How swift is the transition from praise to condemnation!

It is true that I, in part because I am small but not only, prefer Christmas: I am moved beyond saying that my God decided to be like me; and that, right there, is my salvation. But I am so grateful to Jesus that He went all the way in His love for me! And that He accepted to die a suffering and violent death, humiliated and abandoned. I now have the certainty that whatever happens in my life, I shall not be alone, for my Lord will be there with me. And that is why I have no fear. Thank you, my dear Jesus!

I shall live these days in silence, adoration and thanksgiving. For I am privileged to know that my Lord will rise in three days, never to die again, and that He keeps a place for me, close to Him.

Until next week, I wish that you may have your days filled with God.

Love, Marta
